Charlie served as Chairman of Pappas Ventures’ Scientific Advisory Board from its inception until 2004. He continues to serve as an informal advisor. He served as Chairman and CEO of Glaxo Inc. from 1989 to May 1995, and also served as a member of the board of directors of Glaxo plc. Previously, he was general director of Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Charlie is past Chairman of the New York Academy of Sciences, and past Chairman of The Commonwealth Fund. He is currently a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a member of the CSIS Board of Trustees, Chairman of Project HOPE, Chairman of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, and Chairman of the Overseers Committee to Visit the Harvard Medical School. In addition, he serves on the boards of several public companies, including Genentech and Fisher Scientific International.
