Barry joined Pappas Ventures in 2004 and is the Director of Emerging Programs at Duke's Translational Research Institute where he manages seed funding to help commercialize Duke faculty innovation. Barry is also professor of Biomedical Engineering, with appointments in Surgery and Business Administration. A 20-year member of the Duke faculty, Barry has considerable experience in both business and academic leadership. He is a world leader in injury research and product safety with over 100 publications and has served as a Senior Scientific Advisor at the Centers for Disease Control. For the last 15 years, he has maintained an active consulting practice advising clients including the NFL, NASCAR, orthopaedic device manufacturers, most major automotive manufacturers and U.S. federal organizations concerned with product safety. Barry has a broad base of expertise in medical devices, business, and clinical practice. At Pappas his responsibilities include sourcing investment opportunities, reviewing business plans and participating in the investment and diligence process. Barry has served as a board observer at FlowCardia, is both a board observer and Scientific Advisory Board member at Gentis, and is a board observer at TyRx.

He also serves on the board of directors for ibility, the North Carolina Advanced Medical Technologies Center of Innovation.
